Thousands of UC advocates have supported SB 895, the California Science and Health Research Bond Act, sending nearly 14,000 emails to lawmakers and rallying at the state Capitol. Their efforts helped move the UC-sponsored legislation through the Assembly Appropriations Committee to the Assembly floor. Lawmakers amended the proposal from the Senate-passed $12 billion version. The bill is intended to help fill gaps created by federal funding disruptions. The Legislature has until August 31 to send the measure to the governor. If approved by the Legislature and signed by Governor Newsom, voters could see the bond on a ballot in 2028 to provide grants and loans for scientific research at public and private institutions, including UC campuses.
