A team of UCLA Health researchers has received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant for a five-year study to investigate the potential of school-based health centers (SBHCs) in improving health and academic outcomes for students dealing with chronic absenteeism. Led by Rebecca Dudovitz and Paul Chung, the study aims to determine whether SBHCs can reduce barriers to care, address specific health conditions, and improve health equity. The researchers will look for absenteeism patterns, assess healthcare use disparities, evaluate the impact of SBHC use on absenteeism events and school attendance, and engage stakeholders to develop interventions supporting students who are chronically absent from school.
