UCLA is acquiring two sites from Marymount California University in Rancho Palos Verdes and San Pedro — properties that will boost access to a UCLA education and enhance the university’s impact in the region. “As demand for our academic offerings continues to grow, this acquisition will allow us to expand student access in line with UC’s 2030 goals, strengthen our connections to the greater L.A. region, and deepen our institution’s research and public service impact,” said Chancellor Gene Block.
On September 28th candidates for LA City Council District 5 and LA County Board of Supervisors District 3 seats discussed critical issues, including public health, homelessness, affordable housing and more.
The civic engagement forums were a collaboration with the Hammer Museum, Spectrum News, North Westwood Neighborhood Council, West LA Chamber of Commerce, Westwood Community Council, Westwood Neighborhood Council, and the Westwood Village Improvement Association. UCLA’s annual volunteer day partnered this year with USC to create Serve LA 2022, a joint effort of the two universities. UCLA has held a volunteer day for 14 years; the annual event is a cornerstone of the UCLA experience, reflecting the university’s commitment to serving the community.
More than 2,000 volunteers donated their time at 55 locations, including schools, food banks, shelters, parks and more.

California Clean Air Day, a project of the Coalition for Clean Air, is a statewide effort to encourage individuals and communities, like Bruins at UCLA, to take action to clear the air.
During October, UCLA commuters will take part in sustainable alternatives to driving to help advance the campus’s sustainability goals by bicycling, carpooling, using public transportation and telecommuting to raise awareness about the impact of vehicles on the environment.
Preliminary data found that 8% of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) adults in California experienced a hate incident due to COVID-19; of those, 84% said they sustained verbal abuse or insults. In addition to the AANHPI data, UCLA’s 2022 California Health Interview Survey released findings from a series of COVID-19 questions on Californians’ experiences with long COVID, views on vaccines and boosters, personal and financial impacts of the pandemic, and risk reduction behaviors.
