Earlier this month, Governor Gavin Newsom virtually swore-in 120 UCLA undergraduates as members of the inaugural class of CaliforniansforAll College Corps Fellows. The largest state-level investment in a college service program in California’s history, the corps will help provide debt-free pathways to higher education and promote informed service learning that empowers students to bring what they learn back to their communities.
An ambitious social impact project, UCLA’s Initiative to Study Hate brings together a broad consortium of scholars to better understand and ultimately mitigate hate in its multiple forms.
UCLA Chicano Studies professor Veronica Terriquez launched Freedom Summer when she was a faculty member at UC Santa Cruz; since then the program has expanded to include all undergraduate UC campuses, California Community Colleges and concurrently enrolled high school students.
“Seven out of 10 young people in California are young people of color. Engaging them is an important part of building an electorate that effectively represents the people of the state,” Terriquez said.
In a joint statement, the leaders of the University of California, California State University and California Community College systems responded to the recent Fifth Circuit Court’s ruling with a call for a permanent path to citizenship for DACA recipients. They also urged current DACA recipients to renew their status through free legal services available at their respective campuses.
Sparked by the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, the civil unrest engulfing Iran has entered its second month. Amini died while in police custody after having been arrested for allegedly violating the country’s strict hijab law, and in the ensuing protests, demonstrators have called for greater freedom for women and an end to theocratic rule.

The free program aims to provide a robust STEM curriculum at UCLA for ninth and 10th graders from underserved LAUSD high schools. The program, which runs three Saturdays per month from October through May, will offer complimentary transportation, meals and school supplies.
UCLA cityLab Director Dana Cuff led a team that worked with Assemblymember Richard Bloom on legislation to help K-12 teachers. Assembly Bill 2295, which Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law on September 28, streamlines the development of affordable and mixed-income housing for teachers and support staff of California’s K-12 public schools and could create opportunities for up to 2.3 million housing units.
“ELFIN is proof that space is accessible to students and not just big industry players,” said Vassilis Angelopoulos, a professor of Earth, planetary and space sciences. “It is an immensely valuable educational experience and a tradition we intend to continue.”
Exploring Your Universe is UCLA’s annual science fair for all ages and backgrounds. Thousands of participants from the greater LA area are welcome to campus every first Sunday in November for this hands-on learning experience.
The report highlights urgent need for mental health services and challenges accessing medical care. Over one-third of respondents between the ages of 13 and 17 said they needed help for emotional or mental health problems in 2021.
"Operation Mend’s 15th Anniversary Celebration represents the long-term commitment UCLA has made to treating our military, veterans and their caregivers suffering from the visible and invisible wounds of war," said UCLA Chancellor Gene Block.
Operation Mend provides surgical and medical treatment, comprehensive psychological evaluation and support, and intensive treatment programs for PTSD, traumatic brain injury and substance use disorder. It is the only program in the nation that includes caregivers alongside their warriors as full participants in a mental health treatment program for veterans.
