UCLA, in collaboration with several community partners, is hosting two local candidate forums on September 28 at the Hammer Museum. This in-person event will feature LA City Council District 5 candidates Katy Young Yaroslavsky and Sam Yerbi and LA County Board of Supervisors District 3 candidates Bob Hertzberg and Lindsey Horvath. Both forums will be co-moderated by Darnell Hunt, UCLA executive vice chancellor and provost and Alex Cohen, anchor of “Your Morning” and host of “Inside the Issues” on Spectrum News 1. The City Council forum begins at 7 p.m. and the County Board of Supervisors forum begins at 8 p.m. Admission is free, but seats are limited; register online

On Saturday September 24, UCLA and USC will team up in a county-wide community service day. The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has been awarded a $13.6 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to continue to study the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines and the long-term impact of infection among U.S. health care workers. The project will enroll 15,000 health care personnel at academic medical centers across the country, including Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
On September 14, UC advocates participated in Capitol Hill meetings as part of the Rally for Medical Research, an annual advocacy event promoting the value of federal investment in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and medical research. With support from the NIH, UC researchers are working to cure cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, HIV/AIDS and more.
A $1.67 million gift from the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation will establish the UCLA Dentistry MINDFUL Project. This new program will provide mobile care for geriatric and special needs populations, while offering practical learning for UCLA dental students to train in community-based public health settings.
